Happy New Year! I'm determined to keep my LEGO blog active throughout 2026, and what better way to show that than with a set review at the start of the year?! Today, we take a look at a set that I got for Christmas a few days ago: LEGO #40818: Italy Postcard.
With 189 pieces and a MSRP of $14.99, this is an easy "impulse" purchase for a lot of people. However, is it worth the money? Let's take a closer look beginning with the build experience.
The build is done with a simple SNOT (studs not on top) frame, a background, and three small 4x6 scenes that will cover the skeletal frame.
$15 USD is almost the cheapest level these days for a proper LEGO set. That said, despite a higher-than-usual piece count for the price, this set is almost all tiny pieces, which inflates the numbers substantially. In the end, the price seems about right for a current LEGO set (neither too high, nor too low).
I liked that the background was basically all tiles except for one bit of seaside Almalfi coast homes jutting out of the background. Once the background piece is added to the skeletal frame, the mountainside homes look perfect with the water and sailboat!
In the end, I give LEGO 40818: Italy Postcard a solid 3/5 stars. This set is exactly what it purports to be, and if that's what you want, then you won't be disappointed. However, there are no surprises, no play value, and no minifigures included, so this set won't be for everyone! For me, it's going to look great on my bookshelf in my office at work, and every time I look at the set, I'll be reminded of all of the good times that I've had while visiting Italy in my life.
